Four-Side-Seal Sachet Packaging

Review the fill cavity, perimeter seals and product delivery for small sachets such as ketchup and sauce portions.

Measure the usable cavity

A four-side-seal sachet has sealed edges surrounding its fill area. The overall width and length are not the same as the space available for the product. Mark the sealing margins on the drawing and provide an actual filled sample if one is available. State the target quantity and the desired pack appearance rather than specifying only the outside dimensions.

Define the product at filling conditions

The catalog contains a four-side-seal sauce configuration with piston dosing. Describe the sauce at the temperature at which it will be packed, including any particles and changes in consistency. Ask which hopper and nozzle arrangement is proposed and whether heating or stirring is part of the quoted scope. Those options should be written explicitly instead of assumed from the product name.

Coordinate fill placement and sealing

The filling sequence needs to keep the planned seal area suitable for closure. In a trial, inspect drips, strings of product and splashes near the edges. Compare the actual film and printed layout with the machine proposal. The filling system and sealing equipment should be evaluated together; a dosing test alone does not demonstrate that a finished sachet can be produced reliably.

Make the opening part of acceptance

Locate the tear feature and any code area so they do not obstruct the required seals or make the sachet difficult to open. Inspect consecutive filled packs and record the quantity, material and conditions used. Product treatment, storage and shelf-life requirements require their own validation; a neat-looking sachet is not proof of those outcomes.

Calculate the cavity inside the printed outline

A four-side-seal sachet has sealed borders around its perimeter, leaving a usable cavity smaller than the external rectangle. Specify both sets of dimensions. The seal areas, cut position and opening feature should appear on the same drawing as the artwork. Otherwise, a package approved visually may leave insufficient space for the intended dose or place important text where it will be cut or distorted.

The catalog's sauce sachet configuration pairs this format with piston dosing and optional hopper features. Use it as a starting point for a product-specific discussion. Provide the planned fill quantity, product condition and a physical reference pack where available. If the reference contains a different product, explain that difference so the supplier does not infer cavity requirements from an example with another density, viscosity or filling behavior.

Coordinate the nozzle with the narrow filling space

A small sachet can require careful control of where the product enters and how delivery stops. Review the nozzle position and product path against the actual cavity. Viscous sauces may form a trailing strand or leave residue near the closing area; thin liquids can present a different filling behavior. The suitable arrangement must be assessed with the intended product at its production temperature.

Observe the fill and the subsequent sealing operation together during the trial. If contamination appears, record where it is found and what preceded it. A nozzle adjustment, a product-condition change or a timing change may address a different cause from a sealing-setting change. Keep those adjustments separate in the record. This helps the supplier and buyer identify a repeatable method instead of accepting a neat final sample without understanding how it was achieved.

Reserve the border for its actual functions

The sealed border is not merely a graphic frame. It provides closure, supports the cut and may contain the opening feature. Ask the material and equipment suppliers to review the proposed width and construction together. A request to make the border narrower for appearance can alter the available sealing and cutting space, so it deserves a technical review before the artwork is finalized.

Check the consistency of all four sides across multiple samples. Inspect corners and transitions as well as the straight sections. If the package uses a notch, confirm its placement and its effect on the intended opening action using filled samples. Keep coding clear of locations that become hard to read after sealing or tearing. A coordinated border design supports both production consistency and the way the end user holds and opens the portion pack.

Compare filling quantity with the final pack feel

The nominal dose should produce a sachet that can be handled and opened as intended. Assess how the product distributes within the cavity and whether the pack feels excessively tight or leaves unwanted empty space. The correct appearance depends on the application, so agree the target with the product team rather than treating one visual preference as universal.

Where the filler is adjusted volumetrically but the product is sold by mass, define the sampling and weighing method for the trial. Record the product temperature and condition alongside the measurements. Include the planned range of fill quantities if more than one portion size will use the same format. A successful nominal sample does not automatically establish performance at the minimum and maximum requested settings, particularly when the product behavior changes with temperature or mixing.

Test the opening with the intended use case

A portion sachet is usually opened during another activity, such as preparing or serving food. Reproduce that action with the intended users and filled packs. Observe whether the opening feature is easy to find, whether the tear direction is predictable and whether the product can be dispensed cleanly. A package that opens easily may still create an inconvenient opening size for a thick sauce.

Record the specific difficulty before changing the design. A notch position, cavity proportion or material revision can affect both user experience and machine setup. Recheck sealing and print registration after a significant change. This avoids solving an opening problem in a hand-made prototype while creating a new production problem. The final approved sample should represent the actual material, filling method and cutting arrangement intended for routine manufacture.

Define the operating range with representative trials

For purchasing, assemble the sachet drawing, film specification, product sample and intended filling conditions into one trial brief. Include startup, steady running, a pause and restart, and normal product replenishment. Record fill quantity, seal observations, code readability and opening performance. Keep samples associated with their operating condition and any adjustment made during the run.

Ask the supplier to identify the format parts and settings used, plus the work required to change to another sachet size. Separate demonstrated combinations from requested but untested variants. The completed record should make clear which product, quantity and package construction worked together. It should also leave product preservation, sanitation validation and distribution suitability with the responsible factory process review, rather than treating a successfully filled four-side-seal sachet as evidence for those separate outcomes.

Can a sachet be made shorter without changing the dose?

Review the usable cavity and the filling event before approving that change. A shorter external length reduces space after the seal borders are allowed for, and the product may approach the closing region differently. Make samples using the actual formulation and laminate, then inspect seal cleanliness, filled appearance and dispensing. Update the drawing and trial record even if the nozzle and nominal quantity remain unchanged. A small graphic or dimensional revision can become a meaningful process change when the format has limited internal space, so it deserves a focused compatibility check.
